Welcome to City of Cambridge Bowls Club

We are a friendly and welcoming bowls club based in the heart of Cambridge, playing on the beautiful and historic green at Christ’s Pieces.

Our outdoor season runs from 27th April through to mid-September. We compete in both the Cambridge & District League and the Meldreth & District League.

New bowlers are always welcome. Whether you are completely new to the sport or an experienced player, we offer a supportive environment with a strong social spirit.

City Bowls is more than just a sports club — it is a community. Alongside competitive bowling, we enjoy a lively social calendar and a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere.

The Health Benefits of Bowls for All Ages

Bowls is a welcoming, low-impact sport that brings people together while supporting physical, mental, and social wellbeing.

It gently improves balance, coordination, flexibility, and mobility, making it enjoyable and accessible for players of all ages and abilities.

Bowls truly shines as a social sport. It encourages conversation, teamwork, laughter, and connection, helping to build lasting friendships and a strong sense of community.

Because bowls is played at a comfortable pace, it’s ideal for building confidence and keeping active without placing heavy strain on joints. The combination of light walking, controlled movement, and gentle stretching supports overall fitness and can help maintain strength and stability as we get older.

Just as important are the mental benefits: spending time outdoors, learning new skills, and sharing a friendly competitive spirit can boost mood, reduce stress, and improve general wellbeing.

Social Life at City Bowls Club

Bowling is only part of what we do. City of Cambridge Bowls Club has a friendly and welcoming social scene that brings members together both on and off the green. Whether you’ve just joined or you’ve been playing for years, our social events are a great way to meet people, relax after a match, and feel part of the club.

We keep things informal, inclusive, and good fun — from a quick drink after a home fixture to larger get-togethers through the season. Many members say the social side of the club is one of the best parts of being at City Bowls.

Regular Social Events

Alongside league fixtures and friendlies, we run a selection of regular social events throughout the year. These vary depending on the season and member availability, but typically include:

  • Post-home match drinks: The Elm Tree, Orchard Street, Cambridge (short walk from the green)
  • Summer barbecue: a relaxed club get-together during the outdoor season
  • Bowls summer tour fixture: an annual highlight with bowls and a good social evening
  • Christmas festive dinner: a chance to catch up with everyone during the winter season
  • Winter socials: informal meetups and get-togethers while we’re playing indoors

New members are always encouraged to come along — you don’t need to know everyone to enjoy yourself. If you’d like to suggest a social idea or help organise an event, just speak to one of the committee.

Indoor Bowls Season

Our indoor bowls season runs from late September to mid-April, played at the Chesterton Indoor Bowls club.
